Sources: 4. Developments: 2. The French swimming pool market is seeing a shift toward smaller, compact formats, often called ‘piscine apéro’. These basins, typically under 10 m², now represent 20% to 25% of sales for many builders, reflecting a trend toward social relaxation and reduced water usage. The average pool size in France has declined from 42 m² before 1991 to 29 m² since 2019. Alongside this trend, the use of repurposed maritime containers as pool structures is emerging. These containers utilize fiberglass or reinforced PVC liners to ensure watertightness, offering a design-oriented alternative to traditional excavation that requires less landscaping. However, these installations are subject to strict urban planning regulations. While pools under 10 m² are generally exempt from authorization, requirements change if a pool includes a shelter exceeding 1.80 meters in height or if the property is located in a protected heritage site. Depending on the size and local urban plans, owners may need to file a prior declaration of works or obtain a full building permit. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-28: France swimming pool regulations and installation trends French homeowners must follow specific urban planning rules for pools, including size and height restrictions, while new container-based pool designs offer an alternative to traditional excavation. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/france-swimming-pool-regulations-and-installation-trends ### 2026-09-05: France sees rise in compact and container swimming pools France is seeing a rise in small, compact swimming pools and container-based models, driven by social trends and a shift toward smaller residential plots and lower maintenance costs. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/france-sees-rise-in-compact-and-container-swimming-pools --- Cite as: French residential swimming pool trends and regulations.
