France continues to face a significant demographic shift in its education system. The Ministry of National Education projects a total loss of 1.7 million students by 2035, a 14.2% decline from the 2025 school year. This trend, driven by falling birth rates, is moving from primary schools through to high schools. Following a drop of approximately 120,900 students between the 2024 and 2025 school years, an additional decrease of about 160,000 is expected for the 2026 school year. In the Academy of Lille, officials anticipate a 2% drop this year, which may lead to smaller class sizes, potentially averaging 21 students per class by 2026.

Beyond demographics, the sector faces mounting structural and financial pressures. A Senate Finance Commission report indicates that teachers have experienced a decrease in real remuneration of between 15% and 25% over the last two decades, with effective salaries falling below those of other workers holding at least a bachelor’s degree.

Working conditions are also under scrutiny. The CFDT union has raised concerns regarding the lack of state preparation for exceptional circumstances like heatwaves and cyberattacks, prompting the ministry to modify exam calendars to avoid afternoon sessions. Additionally, unions such as SUD éducation have highlighted infrastructure crises, including the presence of asbestos in some buildings, a lack of personnel in 73% of establishments, and inadequate facilities to manage the increasing frequency and duration of heatwaves caused by climate change.
