A legal dispute has emerged between the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN) and Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) regarding approximately $12.4 million in contested federal funding.

The conflict follows a forensic audit conducted by KPMG, which initially identified significant unsupported expenses between 2019 and 2024. While the initial audit flagged as much as $34 million in questionable transactions, the current dispute focuses on a reduced amount of roughly $12.4 million, including expenditures related to COVID-19 personal protective equipment.

FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron has rejected the repayment demands, alleging procedural unfairness and asserting that the organization intends to seek a judicial review. The FSIN maintains that the expenditures are eligible and claims that certain substantiated amounts, such as $8 million for protective equipment, were improperly added back to the claim. In response, the federal government through ISC has announced plans to file a statement of claim to recover the funds.
