The Gallagher Premiership season began with the defending champions, Northampton Saints, preparing to face a restructured Newcastle Red Bulls side. The Saints' opening squad featured several England internationals and marked Henry Pollock’s 50th appearance for the club.

Following the season opener, Northampton Saints secured a high-scoring 71-48 victory against Bath at the DPD Stadium. The match, which featured 18 total tries, was noted as the second-highest scoring game in the history of the English top flight. Ollie Sleightholme scored a hat-trick for the Saints, while Tommy Freeman added two tries.

Northampton Director of Rugby Phil Dowson attributed the high-scoring nature of the game to a shift in team mentality and rule changes regarding kicking that encourage more open play and counter-attacks. Dowson noted that teams now possess a “greater appetite to move the ball during counter-attacks,” which rewards risk-taking and high skill levels. Despite the high offensive output, Bath, who made 12 changes for the fixture, suffered their first loss of the season.
