Chilean defender Gary Medel has addressed his future regarding both the national team and his professional retirement. Medel rejected a proposal by Arturo Vidal to reintegrate veteran players from Chile’s ‘golden generation’ into the national squad, stating that the demands of the team are too high and that his time representing the country has passed.

Regarding his club career, Medel expressed an intention to continue playing in 2027, though he remains uncertain if this will be with Universidad Católica or another club. His recent performance has been impacted by injuries, having played only 1,103 minutes across 19 matches. In response to these challenges, former player Jorge Aravena has advised Medel to consider retirement to secure a high-level farewell match, suggesting he follow the example of Claudio Bravo by retiring while playing abroad to maintain his professional image.
