Gateshead FC has experienced a period of significant struggle in the National League. Following a 6-0 first-half deficit against Southend United, manager Lee Cattermole described the performance as an “unacceptable result” and noted that the team faced a difficult atmosphere following recent tensions regarding player selection.

This was followed by a 4-0 defeat to Wealdstone, which left Gateshead at the bottom of the league table with four points from ten games. During this match, first-team coach Ben Clark handled post-match duties in place of Cattermole, stating that “confidence is low at the moment but the only way you get it back is by getting a win.”
