Gavin McKenna, the first overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, began his professional career with the Toronto Maple Leafs. During the team’s season opener against the Montreal Canadiens, a minor controversy occurred when goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky inadvertently interrupted McKenna’s scheduled solo debut lap during warm-ups. Bobrovsky later apologized, stating he had forgotten the tradition was scheduled for the rookie.

Following his debut, McKenna scored his first NHL goal in his fourth game. During his entry into the league, McKenna noted his summer training with Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid, whom he described as ‘out of this world.’
