Scientific research is investigating the genetics of ‘natural short sleepers’, a rare group of individuals who function optimally on only four to six hours of sleep without the negative health effects typically associated with sleep deprivation.

Initial studies led by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, identified approximately 50 families with genetic variations, such as a mutation in the ADRB1 gene, that regulate sleep and wakefulness.

Subsequent findings have highlighted specific mutations in the DEC2 (BHLHE41) gene as a key distinction between these individuals and those suffering from chronic sleep deprivation. Experts and health authorities, including the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare in Japan and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, emphasize that most people cannot train themselves to become genetic short sleepers and that persistent lack of sleep increases risks for heart disease, dementia, and premature death.

## Timeline

### 2026-10-27: Scientific distinction between natural short sleepers and sleep deprivation

True short sleepers possess rare genetic mutations allowing for minimal sleep, whereas most self-proclaimed short sleepers are actually experiencing chronic sleep deprivation.

### 2026-10-02: Genetics of natural short sleepers studied by scientists

Researchers are studying ‘natural short sleepers’ who genetically require only 4–6 hours of sleep, often linked to mutations in the ADRB1 gene.
