The Horn of Africa is experiencing heightened geopolitical competition as global and regional powers vie for strategic influence. Initial tensions centered on the status of Somaliland and the Berbera Port, with the United States, Israel, and India monitoring the region to secure Red Sea maritime routes. 

These tensions have since expanded to include Nile Basin water rights and intensified maritime disputes. China has emerged as an influential actor in the dispute between Egypt and Ethiopia regarding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), with Beijing affirming Egypt’s right to protect its water and food security. 

Simultaneously, diplomatic rifts have escalated following a memorandum of understanding between Ethiopia and Somaliland, which reportedly linked potential recognition of Somaliland to access to coastline and port facilities. In response, the Somali Federal Government rejected the deal as a violation of its sovereignty and canceled agreements covering the ports of Berbera, Bosaso, and Kismayo. This instability persists alongside competing foreign interests, including Turkish military training in Somalia and UAE investments in Berbera.
