Agricultural officials and community leaders in Germany have highlighted significant economic and environmental pressures facing the farming sector during recent harvest events. In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the 35th State Harvest Festival in Grabow showcased regional products while addressing production difficulties. Agriculture Minister Dr. Till Backhaus noted that despite varied yields in crops like winter wheat and rapeseed, high costs for energy, fertilizer, and machinery repairs since 2022 have challenged profitability. Similarly, in Meppen, officials marked the harvest with the presentation of the ‘Erntekrone’. During the ceremony, Monika Uphaus, chairwoman of the Meppen District Rural Women, stated that while artificial intelligence is being integrated into farming, it cannot offset climate change impacts such as extreme droughts and subsequent crop failures. District Administrator Marc-André Burgdorf further identified falling prices, particularly in pork, and excessive regulation as primary concerns for the industry’s future and food security. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-13: Meppen officials highlight agricultural challenges during harvest ceremony Agricultural representatives in Meppen, Germany, highlighted challenges including climate-driven droughts, falling prices, and regulatory burdens during the annual presentation of the harvest crown. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/meppen-officials-highlight-agricultural-challenges-during-harvest-ceremony ### 2026-10-02: Grabow hosts 35th Mecklenburg-Vorpommern State Harvest Festival Grabow hosts the 35th Mecklenburg-Vorpommern State Harvest Festival, celebrating regional agriculture amid economic challenges like rising costs for fertilizer and machinery. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/grabow-hosts-35th-mecklenburg-vorpommern-state-harvest-festival --- Cite as: German agricultural economic and environmental challenges.
