Environmental conservation efforts in Germany are focusing on habitat protection, biodiversity, and the maintenance of cultural landscapes through various funding and training initiatives.

In the Höxter district, the NRW-Stiftung and state funds from North Rhine-Westphalia are providing up to 500,000 euros to purchase and develop land near the ‘Buchenwald bei Bellenberg’ nature reserve in Steinheim-Ottenhausen. This project aims to improve biological connectivity for species such as the common toad, grass frog, and the endangered European tree frog. Similarly, in the Ries region, foundations including the Rieser Naturstiftung, Dr. Hans Mattern-Stiftung, and the Gerda Schupp-Schied and Hansjörg Schupp-Stiftung are utilizing endowments to fund landscape maintenance and the care of nutrient-poor grasslands in areas such as Holheim, Ederheim, Hürnheim, and Schmähingen.

Initiatives to preserve traditional orchard meadows (Streuobstwiesen) are also expanding. In the Borken district, the Naturfördergesellschaft is launching a campaign to plant 20 varieties of old high-stem fruit trees, offering to cover half the costs for up to 25 trees. To ensure long-term ecological maintenance, the Landschaftspflegeverband Main-Kinzig-Kreis is providing professional training courses for certified landscape orchardists.

In Walldorf, the city is offering subsidized fruit trees and native shrubs to promote biotope connectivity and climate protection. Meanwhile, in Upper Franconia, authorities are working to identify and save old fruit varieties as trees planted around 1940 reach the end of their lifespans, aiming to preserve unique genetic traits and heat resistance essential for adapting to changing environmental conditions.
