German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has faced scrutiny regarding his emotional temperament and leadership during a period of political pressure. Biographer Mariam Lau noted that Merz displays strong emotions more frequently than other chancellors, citing his reactions to the war in Ukraine and his vulnerability when visiting Jewish students in Berlin. Lau also described the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) as facing an existential crisis, noting that many voters perceive Merz as lacking relatability.

This emotionality was further evidenced during the ‘Deutscher Schulpreis’ ceremony in Berlin, where Merz was moved to tears after being embraced by students and teachers. While some observers viewed the moment as an expression of authenticity, others questioned whether such displays affect the professional distance required of the office. Following his speech praising teachers, educational unions called for concrete actions, such as granting teachers civil service status, to ensure school system stability.
