Disability benefits and support systems in Germany involve the assessment of the degree of disability (GdB) to determine eligibility for social participation and financial aid. Under current regulations, individuals with a GdB of 50 or higher are classified as severely disabled, while those with a GdB of 30 or 40 may seek equality status. Long-term care insurance also provides subsidies, up to 4,180 euros per person, for home modifications such as stairlifts or level-access showers to promote independence.

Recent efforts to reform medical aid guidelines, implemented in May 2025 to accelerate the provision of aids like wheelchairs, have faced significant implementation challenges. A study from the University of Witten/Herdecke found that three out of four surveyed parents reported no improvement, citing continued bureaucratic burdens and communication issues.

In response to ongoing needs, the German government is planning structural reforms to integration assistance (Eingliederungshilfe), which serves over one million people. The Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs is collaborating with federal and state authorities to reform service management and administrative procedures, with legal changes expected to follow recommendations released in mid-2026.
