Germany has implemented several initiatives to recognize excellence in education and the publishing sector.

Through the ‘MINT Zukunft schaffen!’ national initiative, numerous schools in Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate received awards for STEM (MINT) and digital education. In Hesse, 42 schools were recognized, while Rhineland-Palatinate honored 62 schools, resulting in 73 total awards including ‘MINT-friendly’ and ‘Digital School’ designations. The certification process in Hesse also involved appointing new MINT ambassadors to support educational and research projects.

In late September 2026, the Robert Bosch Stiftung and the Heidehof Stiftung held the ceremony for the German School Prize (Deutscher Schulpreis) in Berlin. The main prize, valued at 100,000 euros, was awarded to the Bertha-von-Suttner-Schule in Mörfelden-Walldorf, Hesse. Five additional prizes of 30,000 euros each were presented to the Ferdinand-von-Steinbeis-Schule, the Hans-Leipelt-Schule, the Georg-Christoph-Lichtenberg-Oberstufengymnasium, the Oberschule Berenbostel, and the Staatliche Grundschule Tannroda. The Stadtteilschule Wilhelmsburg in Hamburg was also honored with a special jury prize for social cohesion. Chancellor Friedrich Merz presented the awards, stating they highlight schools that foster individual talent while adapting to societal developments.

In the publishing industry, the 2026 German Publishing Award (Deutscher Verlagspreis) has named 85 winners. This year’s awards include a new innovation prize alongside a sustainability prize, with the official ceremony set to take place during the Frankfurt Book Fair in October.
