The German Federal Ministry of the Interior is evaluating a modernization of the national identity card, with potential changes expected as early as 2027.

A central proposal involves removing the printed residential address from the physical card to enhance data privacy and security. Officials noted that printed addresses pose a risk if an ID is stolen alongside house keys. Instead, the address could be stored exclusively in an encrypted format on the integrated chip to prevent the misuse of personal information.

Other proposed enhancements include larger photographs, improved cryptographic security, and the integration of a Data-Matrix code to facilitate easier identity verification. To address needs where the ID must serve as proof of address, such as for banking, the ministry is exploring digital solutions. The full conception of the new document is expected to continue through the end of 2027.
