In July 2026, the German Navy confirmed the acquisition of four new MEKO A-200 frigates to expand its surface-combat fleet. Following this, in August, German defence group Rheinmetall unveiled the GMF 140, a 140-metre, 6,000-tonne multi-mission frigate. 

Designed for blue-water, coastal, and expeditionary operations, the GMF 140 features a low-observability hull and an integrated digital architecture intended for operation with minimal crew. The vessel is equipped to handle air defense, anti-ballistic missile protection, anti-submarine warfare, and long-range land attacks. Technical specifications include 64 vertical-launch cells, a 127mm main gun, torpedo launchers, and potential laser weapon systems. 

The design incorporates significant American technology, specifically the US-origin AEGIS combat system or the Lockheed Martin CMS-330 combat-management suite, alongside radar systems capable of tracking hypersonic weapons and ballistic missiles. Rheinmetall intends to market the vessel initially to North American clients, including the United States and Canada, before expanding to other NATO allies and international markets in the Atlantic and Indo-Pacific regions. These developments reflect Germany’s efforts to modernise its naval capabilities and provide advanced designs to partner nations.
