German performing arts institutions have received major annual honors from specialist publications.

Münchner Kammerspiele, led by Barbara Mundel, was named Theater of the Year by Theater heute after a survey of 45 critics. The institution also won Production of the Year for Jan-Christoph Gockel’s staging of Friedrich Schiller’s Wallenstein, while Annika Neugart was named Newcomer of the Year for her role in the same production.

In the opera category, Staatstheater Mainz was named ‘Opernhaus des Jahres’ (Opera House of the Year) by Opernwelt following a survey of 40 international critics. Under the leadership of Markus Müller, the institution was recognized for its ‘dramaturgically compelling, courageous and politically aware repertoire’. Other winners included Claus Guth as Director of the Year and Thomas Guggeis as Conductor of the Year.
