Recent reports indicate widespread dissatisfaction among German police officers, highlighting potential recruitment and retention challenges.

A survey by the German Police Union (DPolG) focused on Hamburg, where officers gave their employer an average rating of approximately 2.5 out of 5 stars. The findings showed that 74 percent of respondents had considered or sought a transfer to another federal state, and 1,305 participants stated they would not choose a career with the Hamburg police again if given the choice. Grievances included inadequate compensation, insufficient training opportunities, and concerns over planned budget cuts that might increase weekly working hours.

Expanding the scope to a nationwide level, a study by Chemnitz University of Technology involving over 8,000 officers under the age of 29 found similar trends. While general job satisfaction averaged 4.39 on a seven point scale, specific areas such as recognition of work, promotion opportunities, and working hours scored significantly lower. The study also noted issues regarding income, internal communication, and a lack of opportunities for participation in decision-making processes.
