Germany observes Reformation Day on October 31 to commemorate the church reform movement initiated by Martin Luther in 1517. The day is a statutory holiday in nine federal states: Brandenburg, Bremen, Hamburg, Lower Saxony, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Schleswig-Holstein, and Thuringia.

In contrast, more traditionally Catholic states—including Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Saarland—observe All Saints' Day on November 1 as a public holiday. While Halloween is widely celebrated across the country, it is not a legal public holiday in any of the 16 federal states.

Historical focus has expanded to include the role of women in the movement, such as Argula von Grumbach. A historical novel by Silke Halbach, ‘Die Reformatorin’, explores the life of von Grumbach, a Franconian noblewoman who participated in theological discussions and authored influential pamphlets during the 16th century.
