Germany is experiencing a growing trend in the use of “Heimatkennzeichen” (regional license plates). Data from the Federal Motor Transport Authority indicates that nearly 7 million vehicles, including cars, motorcycles, and trailers, are currently using one of 336 reactivated regional identifiers.

Research suggests this trend is driven by local patriotism and a preference for historical identifiers over current administrative district codes. In Bavaria, the “FDB” (Friedberg) prefix has been identified as the most popular among vehicle owners.

To accommodate this shift, economist Ralf Borchert has proposed expanding the landscape of registration prefixes. He suggests introducing new identifiers for 320 German cities and municipalities with populations over 20,000, noting that such an expansion could serve as a tool for local identity and regional advertising.
