Sources: 24. Developments: 6. The German women’s national handball team has commenced preparations for the European Championship following their silver medal performance at the recent World Championship. Head coach Markus Gaugisch is focusing on squad reintegration and tactical refinement while navigating defensive challenges caused by the retirement of Aimée von Pereira and Xenia Smits being on maternity leave. To assess their standing, the squad participated in international friendly matches against Spain in Granollers. After an initial 31-29 victory for Germany, Spain secured a 35-30 win in the second friendly at the Palau d’Esports. Danila So Delgado led the Spanish offense with 10 goals, while Viola Leuchter scored five for Germany. Gaugisch described the loss as a “wake-up call,” noting deficiencies in both offensive and defensive coordination. As the December tournament approaches, the team has moved into intensive preparation via the Golden League. Following a 26-21 victory against Denmark, where goalkeeper Katharina Filter recorded 14 saves, Germany secured a 25-25 draw against the Netherlands in Odense. In the match against the Netherlands, Sarah Wachter made 17 saves and Nina Engel scored ten goals. As the team prepares to begin its European Championship campaign against Sweden on December 4 in Bratislava, Gaugisch continues to manage roster uncertainties, including the availability of Xenia Smits. ## Claims - Germany defeated Denmark with a score of 26:21.
