Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings has officially assumed office as Ghana’s Minister of Environment, Science and Technology. She succeeded Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, who had served in a caretaker capacity following the death of Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed in a helicopter crash in August 2025.

Upon taking office, Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings called for increased transparency and stakeholder collaboration to combat climate change and environmental degradation.

Following her appointment, the Minister expanded her focus to include support for the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), pledging to improve working conditions and promote the commercialization of research. She also proposed a national strategy to manage waste from the green energy transition, such as electric vehicles and solar panels, to ensure Ghana does not become a dumping ground for hazardous electronic waste.

In September 2026, Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings reiterated her commitment to the CSIR, emphasizing the need to retain scientific talent and use research innovations to drive national development. Regarding environmental protection, she highlighted the necessity of proactive planning for the disposal and recycling of solar panels and electric vehicle components. To mitigate these threats, the Minister suggested that Ghana may need to negotiate international agreements for processing specialized waste and urged for improved waste separation at both industrial and household levels.
