The National Identification Authority (NIA) has implemented several digital service expansions and enforcement measures regarding the Ghana Card.

In October 2026, the NIA launched an online replacement service for lost or damaged cards. This digital feature allows citizens living in various countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, and several European nations, to initiate replacements via an official portal without traveling to Ghana. Domestically, the replacement service was extended to specific Prestige 24/7 Centres.

By November 2026, the NIA shifted focus toward enforcement through the activation of its Biometric Verification Taskforce. Following the expiration of a three month grace period on November 2, 2026, the NIA commenced nationwide enforcement of regulations requiring institutions to use digital biometric verification. Under the National Identity Register (Amendment) Regulations, 2026, banks, telecommunications companies, hospitals, and government agencies are prohibited from using visual inspections or photocopies. Instead, these entities must connect to the NIA Identity Verification System Platform (IVSP) or use approved match-on-card devices to verify biometric data, such as fingerprints. The NIA stated this shift is intended to curb identity theft and fraud, noting that photocopies and scanned images are susceptible to alteration and misuse. This mandate also applies to transactions such as land sales.

To assist those unable to meet the full certification requirements of the main platform, the NIA is developing a mobile application. This app will provide individuals and small businesses with a simple “yes or no” verification response to confirm biometric identity matches.
