Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, has highlighted high staff attrition at the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC). She noted that the specialized nature of nuclear science requires approximately 15 years of training to reach full productivity, making the loss of experts a significant challenge for the country’s nuclear technology and power generation ambitions. To protect future expansion, she also called for an audit of ministry-owned properties to prevent land encroachment. In broader discussions regarding research stability, Prof. Abigail Opoku Mensah, Administrator of the Ghana National Research Fund, warned that relying on foreign grants creates vulnerabilities. She noted that while African Union members have committed to investing at least 1% of their GDP into research and development, Ghana currently remains below this target. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-13: Ghanaian officials urge local research investment and scientist retention Ghanaian leaders are urging increased local research funding and better retention of skilled scientists to reduce dependence on foreign grants and strengthen nuclear and technological capacities. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/ghanaian-officials-urge-local-research-investment-and-scientist-retention ### 2026-10-11: Ghana Minister urges GAEC to retain specialist nuclear scientists Ghana’s Environment Minister has urged the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission to curb staff attrition to support the nation’s nuclear technology and power generation ambitions. 4 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/ghana-minister-urges-gaec-to-retain-specialist-nuclear-scientists --- Cite as: Ghana scientific talent and research investment.
