The Ghanaian government has announced plans to overhaul household waste collection by phasing out the ‘Aboboyaa’ tricycle system. Local Government Minister Mahama Ayariga stated that the current method will be replaced by purpose-built vehicles designed to discharge waste mechanically at designated transfer stations, from which larger trucks will transport the waste to landfills.

To facilitate this transition, the government is seeking investment for a new fleet and developing an electronic payment system in collaboration with banks and fintech companies. This platform will enable digital payments, including mobile money. The new system will also utilize weighing mechanisms at transfer stations to calculate payments to collection operators based on the quantity of waste discharged. Additionally, the government intends to construct transfer stations within a maximum of five kilometres from communities to improve efficiency.
