Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, has urged the swift operationalization of the National Research Fund. Although the fund was established under the Ghana National Research Fund Act, 2020, and saw a governing board inauguration in June 2025, it has yet to provide intended financial support to researchers. Prof. Appiah Amfo emphasized that policy commitments must translate into practical opportunities for scientific research and innovation. In a separate call for support, Prof. Matthew Glover Addo, Vice-Chancellor of the Catholic University of Ghana, has requested the government establish a dedicated fund for private tertiary institutions. He warned that current government support schemes prioritizing public universities could negatively impact enrollment at private institutions, potentially forcing them to rely solely on their own resources. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-25: Catholic University of Ghana VC calls for private university funding The Vice-Chancellor of the Catholic University of Ghana is calling for a dedicated government fund to support private universities and prevent enrolment declines caused by public university subsidies. 4 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/catholic-university-of-ghana-vc-calls-for-private-university-funding ### 2026-10-11: University of Ghana Vice-Chancellor urges swift activation of National Research Fund University of Ghana Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo is urging the swift operationalization of Ghana’s National Research Fund to provide essential financial support for scientific innovation. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/university-of-ghana-vice-chancellor-urges-swift-activation-of-national-research-fund --- Cite as: Ghanaian tertiary education funding debates.
