Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has signaled her intention to serve until the end of the current legislature in 2027, dismissing speculation regarding early elections as “surreal.” While some political observers suggest a potential vote could follow the approval of the budget, coalition allies in Forza Italia and the Lega party favor completing the full term. Roberto Occhiuto of Forza Italia has called on the center-right coalition to remain innovative and develop distinct political identities to sustain electoral performance.

This stance comes amid ongoing political friction, including the recent controversy in Pontedera. Following a Democratic Party (PD) councilor’s use of the term ‘ciociara’ in a reportedly derogatory manner, Meloni defended the term on social media, stating she is ‘proud to be defined as ciociara’ and highlighting the region’s cultural significance. The PD has maintained that the incident was a ‘linguistic slip’ (lapsus linguistico), arguing the councilor intended to say ‘caciara’ (meaning confusion) rather than deliver a deliberate insult.
