If the remaining icefall fails, the Pasterze will lose its status as the country’s largest glacier.

Similarly, the Schlatenkees glacier in East Tyrol is undergoing rapid melting, with thick ice layers transforming into meltwater lakes. Data indicates the glacier’s area shrank from 9.1 square kilometers in 1998 to 6.8 square kilometers in 2022, a 25 percent loss. Experts suggest that the disappearance of these glaciers contributes to a feedback loop, as the loss of ice reduces the atmosphere's ability to cool in high mountain regions.
