Global and regional data indicate a significant rise in childhood obesity. A UNICEF report covering more than 190 countries states that the prevalence of obesity in children and adolescents aged 5–19 has roughly tripled since 2000, with approximately 188 million individuals living with obesity. The report attributes this trend to the availability of cheap, highly processed foods and intensive marketing of unhealthy products, suggesting structural reforms in school and daycare nutrition.

In Germany, research published in the Robert Koch Institute’s Journal of Health Monitoring shows similar upward trends. An analysis of over four million data points from school entrance examinations indicates that while one in ten preschool children is overweight, the rate increases to nearly 20 percent among adolescents. Approximately four percent of preschool children are classified as obese. Ursula Felderhoff-Müser, President of the German Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, has described these figures as “scary,” identifying a lack of physical activity as a primary driver.

In response to these pediatric health risks, the Nicolas-May-Stiftung has launched the ‘Hand aufs Herz’ project. Working with pediatric cardiologists from Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, the initiative provides cardiovascular screenings directly in schools. The program utilizes health questionnaires, blood pressure measurements, EKGs, and ultrasounds to integrate comprehensive heart health checks into standard pediatric care to improve the early detection of cardiovascular conditions.
