In 2024, global card fraud losses reached approximately $33.4 billion, with the United States accounting for nearly 42% of these losses. As chip technology has made physical counterfeiting more difficult, fraud has increasingly moved toward card-not-present methods, account takeovers, and authorized-push-payment scams. In Cyprus, data from the second half of 2025 indicates that while the total number of fraud incidents decreased by 5% to approximately 14,000 cases, the total value of payment fraud rose by 16% to nearly €3.7 million. Although card payments accounted for 93% of the total number of incidents, credit transfers represented the largest share of monetary value at €2 million (56%).
