The carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) sector is transitioning from demonstration projects toward a growing infrastructure business. As of July 2025, 734 commercial facilities were either operational or under development, with a pipeline capacity of 513 million tons per annum.

Regional developments show a significant shift toward offshore capabilities. In Europe, dedicated CO2 transport-and-storage projects doubled between 2023 and 2024. Specific milestones include the installation of the Douglas CCS platform in the United Kingdom, the world’s first offshore platform designed specifically for CO2 transport and sequestration. Located in Liverpool Bay, this facility aims to sequester 4.5 million tons of CO2 annually at its start, with a target of 10 million tons per year after 2030.

Other global activities include CNOOC commissioning China’s first offshore CCUS project at the Enping 15-1 oilfield, and Petrobras’ Santos Basin project reinjecting 14.2 million tons of CO2 in 2024. In the United States, the California Air Resources Board has proposed new regulations for CCUS and carbon dioxide removal projects to manage safety, monitoring, and financial responsibility for geologic storage.
