The United States maintains a dominant position in the global data center landscape. According to the AI Index 2026 report, the U.S. hosts 5,427 data centers, a figure more than 90% higher than the second-ranked country. While the European Union operates 2,269 facilities, the European Commission has expressed intentions to triple the continent’s capacity within five to seven years to address regional needs.

This dominance is particularly pronounced in the hyperscale market, where the U.S. accounts for 15 of the world’s 20 largest hyperscale markets. This concentration is driven by major cloud operators headquartered in the U.S., such as Amazon, Microsoft, and Google.

While Northern Virginia remains the largest single market, housing nearly 12% of global hyperscale capacity, expansion is diversifying across American states including Texas, Iowa, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Georgia. This rapid scaling of American infrastructure represents a shift away from historically dominant colocation markets in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region, such as the United Kingdom, Malaysia, and Singapore.
