Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights symbolizing the victory of light over darkness, is observed through both personal reflection and community-wide festivities.

Individual experiences highlight the complexities of connecting with Indian heritage while living in urban settings like Queens, New York. Personal reflections note that while the holiday receives political recognition and public school closures, the large-scale, commercialized celebrations often advertised in urban environments can create a sense of detachment from traditional rituals such as oil lamps and prayers.

On a community level, celebrations include global festivities and local events. In London, the ‘Diwali on the Square’ event at Trafalgar Square, organized by the Diwali in London committee and Mayor Sadiq Khan, is set to feature 200 dancers and workshops representing Hindu, Sikh, and Jain communities. In the United States, festivities include a festival at the World’s Fair Unisphere in Queens, a wedding-themed celebration at Flushing Town Hall, and various workshops and pujas across Manhattan. Atlanta is also hosting community fairs in Marietta and Decatur, while Aurora, Illinois, continues its tradition of hosting celebrations at the Eola Community Center.

In Guyana, the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha has announced a wide-ranging calendar for November 2026, including a grand dinner and concert, a bazaar at the Kitty Seawall Roundabout, and a motorcade featuring regional floats.
