The US-based security firm Global Guardian has released its 2027 Global Risk Map, which evaluates travel safety based on factors including crime, armed conflict, political stability, and infrastructure.

Under the new assessment, Iran has been reclassified into the highest ‘extreme risk’ category. Specific warnings for Iran include concerns regarding the political situation and an increased risk of ‘arbitrary detention of foreign nationals’.

Security classifications for the Persian Gulf region have also shifted. Bahrain and Kuwait have moved from moderate to high risk, while Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan are now classified as medium risk. Saudi Arabia remains in the medium risk category. Other nations categorized as extreme risk include Afghanistan, Ukraine, Syria, Yemen, the Gaza Strip, Sudan, Somalia, Myanmar, and Haiti.
