Recent research highlights significant increases in the projected global burden of various diseases by 2050.

A study led by the University of New South Wales indicates that annual new dementia cases are expected to rise from 11.4 million in 2023 to 24.7 million by 2050. The total number of people living with the condition is projected to reach nearly 150 million, with women and residents of low- to middle-income countries expected to face higher incidence rates.

New data published in Nature Medicine, based on an analysis of 204 countries and territories, provides specific projections for cervical cancer. While there were approximately 887,000 new cases and 369,000 deaths worldwide in 2023, annual cases are expected to reach 1.08 million and deaths could rise to 522,000 by 2050. This represents a 20.2% increase in cases and a 39.3% increase in deaths.

The report emphasizes severe health inequalities. In 2023, mortality rates in low-income countries were more than seven times higher than in high-income nations. Sub-Saharan Africa is projected to experience the heaviest burden, with new cases expected to increase by 88.7% and deaths by 95.4%. Although the disease is largely preventable through vaccination, screening, and treatment, current trends suggest no major global region will meet the World Health Organization’s elimination threshold by 2050. In contrast, Greece reported a decline in cases and deaths since 1990.
