The global mining sector continues to see strategic expansion, particularly in critical minerals. Greenland Mines Ltd. is seeking to expand its Sarfartoq rare earth district from 74 square miles to approximately 175 square miles. The North Carolina-based company aims to supply neodymium and praseodymium for electric vehicles, wind turbines, and defense systems, potentially producing roughly one-third of the world’s neodymium-praseodymium oxide refined outside of China. This expansion follows a security agreement between the United States, Greenland, and Denmark designed to prevent adversaries from making sensitive investments in Greenland without U.S. approval, a framework the company says makes undeveloped deposits more accessible to allied supply chains.

In broader Greenlandic mining developments, Critical Metals Corp. has received government approval for the mining and closure plans of its Tanbreez rare earths project. Considered one of the largest undeveloped heavy rare earth deposits outside of China, the project has an estimated after-tax net present value of $2.1 billion. While the approval provides a framework through 2050, the company still requires approvals for environmental management, marine transport, and mineral exports.

Additionally, Greenland Mines Ltd. completed its 2026 field program at the Skaergaard Project, utilizing diamond drilling and geotechnical studies to advance resource evaluation and metallurgical development. The company is evaluating precious metals alongside potential vanadium, iron, and gallium value streams.
