Scientific research has focused on the ‘plastisphere,’ an anthropogenic ecosystem formed by microbial communities—including bacteria, fungi, and viruses—that colonize plastic debris. Originally identified in 2013 in the North Atlantic, these communities transform artificial plastic surfaces into new habitats. This process involves the adhesion of microorganisms to polymers and the production of extracellular polymeric substances, which facilitates the establishment of diverse organisms such as cyanobacteria and various eukaryotic predators and consumers. There are concerns that these unique habitats may facilitate the spread of antibiotic-resistant genes.
