A UN Women report indicates a significant global retreat in gender equality and the institutional capacity to protect women’s rights. Since 2024, one in three institutions dedicated to defending these rights has been weakened through reduced staffing, diminished government influence, or the disappearance of specialized units.

Financial constraints have contributed to this decline, with bilateral aid for gender equality programs falling by 13% between 2023 and 2024, and funds for women’s rights organizations dropping by 28%. Within the United Nations, 42% of entities report a weakening of gender equality efforts due to funding crises.

The report also notes a decline in female leadership. While the number of female heads of state rose slightly from 20 to 28 between 2020 and early 2026, the proportion of women in parliaments has fallen in 54 countries over the last five years, and the number of female ministers has decreased by 20% globally. At current rates, the report warns that gender equality may not be achieved until 2197.

Expanding on these trends, Plan International reports that over one billion women and girls live in countries where gender equality has stagnated or declined over the last 15 years. The organization estimates that at current rates, it will take 171 years to achieve global equality. Critical challenges include 133 million girls being out of school, high rates of female genital mutilation, and increased violence against children in conflict zones, where women and girls constitute 90% of victims.

In response to these regressions, the WomenPower2030 initiative is working in Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, and Peru to empower young feminist leaders to influence public policy regarding climate change, sustainable development, and access to justice.
