Recent reports highlight the prevalence of romance scams targeting older individuals through emotional manipulation on social media and messaging platforms.

In one instance, a 62-year-old man in Spain was defrauded by an individual claiming to be a nurse working on a medical mission. The perpetrator promised a percentage of large savings in exchange for assistance with fund transfers, ultimately leaving the victim with nearly no remaining bank balance.

In Argentina, a 60-year-old woman in Paraná, Entre Ríos, lost approximately 29.8 million pesos following a virtual relationship with a man identifying himself as ‘Michael Lawrence Williams’ via Facebook. The perpetrator, using a WhatsApp number with a United Kingdom prefix, claimed he required funds to secure travel authorizations to visit her. To meet these demands, the victim secured multiple loans from various banking and non-banking financial institutions.

Following an investigation led by prosecutor Daniela Montangie and the Cybercrime Division, authorities traced the funds to a bank account held by a 47-year-old woman in Concordia. Under an order from Guarantee Judge Gabriela Seró, police conducted a raid at a residence in Concordia, seizing three mobile devices for forensic analysis. A woman has been notified as a suspected co-author of the fraudulent scheme as investigators work to uncover the full extent of the criminal network.
