The global semiconductor industry is navigating a period of structural challenges, primarily driven by a critical labor shortage and shifting production capacities.

In the United States, the industry faces a projected shortage of up to 157,000 workers by 2030. As major firms such as Intel, Samsung, and TSMC expand domestic manufacturing, they are struggling to recruit engineers and technicians. This is compounded by the fact that only about 3% of engineering graduates enter the semiconductor field, as many choose the software and AI sectors instead. While high salaries are being offered to attract talent, competition with the software industry remains a significant hurdle.

On a global scale, the shortage is also impacting Asia, where demographic declines in South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan are exacerbating supply issues. In Taiwan, some construction roles have seen supply-to-demand ratios as high as 12:1.

Parallel to these labor constraints, China is rapidly expanding its semiconductor footprint. Driven by government investment, Chinese firms like CXMT and YMTC are advancing in high-value memory chip areas. Projections suggest China’s share of global memory production capacity could rise from 10% to 20% by 2030, prompting calls for South Korean companies to adopt a ‘One Team’ approach to maintain competitiveness in the AI memory era.
