Research published in Geophysical Research Letters indicates that the rate of global warming has accelerated significantly since 2015. By analyzing major temperature datasets and filtering for natural variations like El Niño, solar cycles, and volcanic activity, researchers found the warming pace rose from approximately 0.2 °C per decade (observed between 1970 and 2015) to roughly 0.35 °C per decade in more recent years.

Scientists warn that if these accelerated trends persist, the planet could surpass the 1.5 °C warming limit established by the Paris Agreement before 2030. This follows reports that 2024 was the hottest year on record, reaching 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels. Experts emphasize that preventing extreme climate events depends on reducing CO2 emissions from fossil fuels to zero.

Recent findings from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research suggest the acceleration became detectable around 2013–2014, with statistical confidence exceeding 98%. Climate physicist Antonello Pasini of the National Research Council (CNR) notes that the rate of temperature increase has nearly doubled, reaching approximately 0.4 °C per decade.

Pasini suggests that because this acceleration is not accompanied by a proportional jump in CO2 levels, other anthropogenic factors and climate feedback loops, such as changes in the planet's reflectivity, may be contributing to the surge. The World Meteorological Organization reports that since the pre-industrial era, atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide have increased by nearly 150%, methane by 262%, and nitrous oxide by 123%.
