Research published in Science Advances has identified a mechanism by which high glucose levels assist cancer cells in evading the immune system. Studies led by the Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Research Institute indicate that elevated blood sugar thickens the glycocalyx, a sugar-derived protective layer on the surface of cancer cells.

This thickening creates what researchers describe as an ‘invisibility cloak’ that makes it difficult for immune cells to recognize and destroy tumors. The research identified the HSF1 protein as a primary driver of this protective layer under hyperglycemic conditions. Lead author Kevin Tharp, PhD, noted that these findings may explain the link between high blood sugar and increased cancer risks or diminished treatment outcomes. The study suggests that targeting the glycocalyx could serve as a new therapeutic strategy to make tumors more vulnerable to immunotherapy.
