Manga creator Go Nagai participated in the Lucca Comics and Games 2026 event to reflect on his fifty year career and cultural legacy. During his appearances, the 81 year old creator discussed the origins of his iconic mecha series, including Mazinger Z and UFO Robot Goldrake, and how these works revolutionized the genre by introducing human piloted giant robots.

Nagai noted the influence of Dante Alighieri’s ‘Divine Comedy’ on his creative process, specifically regarding the imagery of demons used in his stories. He also expressed reflections on modern technological shifts, such as artificial intelligence and combat drones, noting how some of his fictional concepts appear to be manifesting in contemporary reality.

The event also included discussions regarding the Goldrake franchise, specifically a French comic book sequel published in Italy by J-POP Manga that continues the story ten years after the victory over Vega.
