Goiânia has been ranked 16th among Brazilian cities in the 2026 Global Cities Index by Oxford Economics. The index evaluates urban areas across five dimensions: Economy, Human Capital, Quality of Life, Environment, and Governance.

While the city showed significant disparities in its metrics, it achieved a notable global rank of 110th in the environmental category. In this specific indicator, which assesses climate change response through air quality, CO2 emissions, and natural disaster exposure, Goiânia outperformed several major international metropolises including New York, Boston, Dallas, and Tokyo.

The city’s environmental performance is attributed to municipal public policy advancements, including the establishment of a municipal greenhouse gas inventory and the development of climate action plans. These efforts earned the city a medal from the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy.
