Recent details clarify that the discovery occurred in mid-August 2026 while workers were installing sewage pipes in a building basement. The cache also includes a gold nugget. The property where the gold was found is owned by CAW Oost-Vlaanderen, a non-profit social organization providing welfare support.

Dendermonde Police have secured the items and moved them to a secure location. The Public Prosecutor's Office of East Flanders is investigating the origin of the hoard to determine if it is linked to any illicit activities. Authorities are currently reviewing historical records of the building, which was previously owned by a prominent brewing family, to identify legitimate heirs. 

Under Belgian law, the discovery does not grant automatic ownership to the workers or the property owners. If a legitimate owner does not claim the property within one year of a proper report, the finders may be eligible for a reward.
