Google Pay has expanded its digital payment capabilities across different regions. In Singapore, Maybank enabled Google Pay support for its credit and debit cardholders, allowing Android and Wear OS users to utilize contactless in-store and online payments via Visa and Mastercard.

Following this, Google Pay officially launched in Nigeria through a strategic partnership with Visa. The rollout enables eligible cardholders from several prominent financial institutions—including FirstBank, Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank), Zenith Bank, United Bank for Africa (UBA), and ProvidusUnity Bank—to conduct contactless and online transactions. 

Guaranty Trust Holding Company (GTCO) has implemented the service across both sides of the transaction: GTBank customers can use Google Wallet for local and international payments, while businesses using the Squad payment gateway, operated by HabariPay, can now accept Google Pay at checkout. To enhance security, the service utilizes tokenization technology to replace sensitive card numbers with unique digital tokens, supporting Nigeria’s transition toward a cashless economy. 

In addition to payment capabilities, Google Wallet allows users to store digital items such as boarding passes, event tickets, and loyalty cards. While the initial rollout includes specific banks and card types, the expansion aims to support Nigeria’s growing demand for digital-first and cashless payment experiences.
