The Great Green Wall is an African Union initiative launched in 2007 to combat desertification and land degradation across an 8,000-kilometer stretch of the Sahel, from Senegal to Djibouti. 

Originally envisioned as a continuous 15-kilometer-wide belt of trees, the project has evolved into a broader ecological effort. It now focuses on restoring diverse ecosystems—including grasslands, wetlands, forests, and agricultural lands—to suit local climatic conditions. The initiative aims to improve soil quality, enhance food security, and mitigate climate change in one of the world’s most vulnerable regions.

To date, approximately 30 million hectares of land have been restored. The project’s long-term goals include restoring 100 million hectares by 2030, removing 250 million tons of carbon emissions, and creating 10 million green jobs to support regional economic recovery.
