The Greek government has introduced new digital initiatives to facilitate administrative processes for citizens living abroad.

In August 2026, the Ministry of Interior launched an online portal allowing the diaspora to register for the 2027 national elections. Under Law 5285/2026, eligible voters can utilize postal voting or vote in person at designated stations. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis noted that the reform established postal voting to make participation “easier than in the past.”

Following this, the Ministry of Interior also introduced a digital process to simplify the registration of civil status events, such as births, marriages, and deaths. This initiative aims to modernize the 1976 civil registry law by allowing for the digital pre-approval of documentation. Deputy Minister Vasilis Spanakis stated the goal is to “digitize paper records and reduce bureaucracy” for the approximately 8,000 annual registrations handled by the Special Registry.
