The Greek Ministry of Culture is implementing various large-scale restoration and modernization projects across significant archaeological sites in Greece.

In Chalkidiki, the Ancient Olynthus site was officially reopened following a 1.42 million euro renovation funded by the Recovery and Resilience Fund. Completed in late 2025, the project upgraded infrastructure, security, and accessibility, while introducing a Digital Information Center and digital applications to enhance the visitor experience.

At Ancient Olympia, a new phase of interventions is underway following the completion of several major projects in early 2026. Following the April 2026 public opening of the Early Christian basilica (or Workshop of Pheidias), the Leonidaion Baths, and the Southern Baths, a new set of works budgeted at approximately 4,000,000 euros has been launched.

This current phase, which began in late September 2026, focuses on the restoration and showcasing of the Roman Octagon, also known as the ‘House of Nero’; the third phase of excavation and presentation of the Gymnasium; and the protection and restoration of the retaining wall of the Treasuries on Mount Kronios.

Specific technical works at the Villa of Nero include the partial restoration of masonry and vaults, the repair of openings, and the repositioning of fallen architectural elements. A key component involves uncovering the existing mosaic floor and securing it with a new protective roof, alongside the design of a new visitor path to prevent stress on original floors. Funding is provided through the Western Greece Regional Operational Programme 2021–2027 and national resources. Culture Minister Lina Mendoni has indicated these efforts are part of a long-term strategy to preserve monumental wealth and upgrade visitor services.
