During the 20th Pyrgötos-Aigánis Kiwi Fruit Festival and related events in Pyrgos, Greek officials highlighted the strategic importance of kiwi production for the nation’s agricultural economy.

Maximos Karakopoulos, General Secretary of the New Democracy Parliamentary Group, noted that kiwi production offers high added value, helping to address the challenges of small and fragmented land holdings. He emphasized that the quality of fruit from the Pineios Delta allows producers to access international markets and expressed hope for the fruit to receive Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) certification.

Christos Kellas, a Member of Parliament, identified the sector as a driver for regional economic development, particularly in Thessaly. He advocated for the use of cooperatives to enhance organization and export expansion, suggesting tax incentives and measures to reduce production costs. Kellas also noted the establishment of a specific compensation category by ELGA for kiwi damage to support producers.
